BioHeritage Alliance
Carrying The Legacy Forward
When the New Zealand's Biological Heritage National Science Challenge wrapped up in June 2024, many of you asked, what happens now?
You spoke of the vibrant research whānau we built together: cross disciplinary, cross-sector, Tiriti-led, values driven. You worried we might lose the connections, the collaboration, the momentum.
We heard you.

That's why the BioHeritage Alliance was born
The Alliance is a national collective of researchers, mana whenua, communities, government, and industry, united by a shared mission: to protect and restore Aotearoa's biological heritage. It is not a new organisation, but a movement. A kaupapa. One that honours what we built and pushes it forward.
Grounded in the values of the Challenge, the Alliance is Tiriti-anchored, transdisciplinary, inclusive, and impact-focused. We champion kaupapa and partnerships co-designed with Māori and communities, ensuring research stays grounded in place, in people, and in long-term impact.
Te Tira Whakamātaki (Melanie Mark-Shadbolt) provides Tiriti leadership and secretariat support, while Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research (Duane Peltzer) maintains access to Challenge data and outputs. Together, they help hold the knowledge, the networks, and the institutional memory.
Our vision is bold but clear, thriving biodiversity, resilient ecosystems, and a future fit biosecurity system, built on relationships, equity, and the active inclusion of mātauranga Māori.
Through science, restoration, innovation, and advocacy, the BioHeritage Alliance continues what we started, collective action for the people and nature of Aotearoa.
The Challenge may have ended. But the mission hasn't.

Our Stories
Stories connect us to our past, shape our present, and inspire our future. We believe that storytelling is a powerful tool for weaving together science, mātauranga Māori, and community action to protect and restore Aotearoa's living heritage.
We want to celebrate the people and places at the heart of our BioHeritage work. Our stories showcase the mahi, the challenges, and the triumphs behind the efforts to create a thriving, resilient Aotearoa.
Whether you are here to learn, be inspired, or find your place in the BioHeritage Alliance journey, these stories are for you. Because every voice matters - and every story adds strength to the collective effort to protect what matters most.
